DETERMINERS
We've done this in the previous classes in the form of a, an, the, few, many, this, that, these, those, much, my, your, ours, his, hers, theirs, some, all, both, a little, each, either, every, etc. etc.
The main work of these is to determine what the noun or subject that's being about , that is already known, new, specific etc.
For example, let's start with: Scientists have discovered a new planet, 140,000 light years from us. The new planet has conditions akin to ours. There are many craters indicative of a possible meteor collision. There are very few plants. There isn't much to report further as we are yet to come across any pictures of other living organisms living there. There might be other planets like this in the universe just to be discovered.
In the above, sentence, a is to introduce a new concept. The is being used to elaborate more about it.
Many, few, much are all determiners. All the underlined words are determiners.
Now, for some exercises.
1. The Sun has a core temperature of 15 million degrees Centigrade.
2. There is a beautiful clock by River Thames. It is the Big Ben.
3. There were many tourists at Madame Tussaud's.
4. There are a few who still believe in age old traditions and customs.
5. There is very little time left for the schools to reopen.
Like this, we can try and incorporate the determiners while conversing with one another.
More to come!
Yours humbly,
Seetha Lakshmi. :-)
